Re: How do YOU handle Paralyzation?
Well, I'd say that any DM that allows a situation where a fighter can just run up and bear hug a lich isn't running the lich correctly in the first place. That's my initial thought. But given the scenario, I would argue that, as I've seen most DMs run liches, they can control that paralysis. It's a ...

Re: How do YOU handle Paralyzation?
I've always done it movie style - you're essentially frozen on the spot, in the position you were in when paralyzed. However, I do allow some paralytic poisons to produce flaccid paralytic states simply for variety. It's such a bitch to move around dead weight. As for someone being grapple...

No, I've always had it fly back and avoid being "intercepted" by someone other than the owner. The magic finds a path to his hand.

Re: Merry Christmas!
Xmas Eve was great this year! But I just realized something odd about the old cartoon/claymation Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer movie. On the Island of Misfit toys, there are...well... misfit toys because they're not "normal". A cowboy who rides an ostrich, a boat that sinks, a toy bird th...

Merry Christmas!
An early wish for a Merry Christmas to everyone! Christmas Eve (tomorrow night) has always been the single most special, most magical night of the year! I wanted to track down a video for one of my all time favorite Christmas carols - the Carol of the Bells, by Trans-Siberian Orchestra! I could list...

Re: 1 or 2e Two new magical books.
Personally, I'd prefer it if the Tome of the Familiar allows the PC to pick a specific requested familiar. It is, after all, a magical tome, so it should have more power. Otherwise he may make 3 rolls of familiars that he doesn't want or need. I'm looking at it similar to a manual of golems - the ma...

Frost giant conundrum
As I'm writing material for the adventure I mentioned on the other thread about the Xmas game I write every year, I realized something... In the entry for Frost Giants in the 2E MM, it lists their MOV as 12 (15). But they don't explain what the 15 is. Any idea? Usually, it will say something like 12...

A Christmas Carol - Sort Of
Or perhaps a Christmas story would be more accurate. Let me back up here first and establish a shit load of background. First, the background for the game. Back in the early 90s we wrapped up an insanely high level Forgotten Realms campaign. I and the players decided to start a new campaign in a new...

Re: Question on psionic ability, dimensional blade
I don't use psionics in my AD&D games, and never read Will and the Way or even recall reading the Psionic Handbook in depth, but in any case I'd agree with you. It's going a bit far to let it hit things only hit by magic weapons.

Hmmm. No, I never have, now that you mention it! I was about to check Aurora's Catalog as well, until I saw you did. Hmmm. I'd assign them different values based on the material. Cheap wooden pipes perhaps a few coppers, bone pipes a silver piece or two, fancy ones with gold accents and what not a w...

Re: Heroism potion and turnig undead?
I'd call that fuzzy logic. Especially since it specifies hit points, saving throws and combat ability but nothing else pertaining to abilities, NWPs, etc. I'd also argue that turning undead is NOT a combat ability, since the PHB refers to it as a "special benefit". It is called a "com...

Re: Heroism potion and turnig undead?
I'd say no for several reasons. First, if we go strictly by the rules in the DMG, it says: "This gives the imbiber a temporary increase in levels ( hit points, combat ability and saves )..." When the potion is quaffed, the individual fights as if he were at the level bestowed by the magic ...

Argh! Never mind. I didn't notice you were replying about the Illusionist Handbook, so I was replying about RoUIII. But yes, the illusionist handbook is something I'd love to tackle, if we can get thru RoUIII first. The layout is done, and there is a decent amount of material for it, but everyone wh...

We're down to the last 10 rooms or less. This past year has been so stressful and busy prepping for Armageddon and dealing with all the research I've had to sit through (I'm at or beyond the 1,500 hr. mark of webinars and research in the past 18 months alone) that not much else has gotten done, unfo...

Re: Magic resistance - 1st Edition or 2nd Edition rules?
That might be a perfect solutions. At least very powerful and highly magical monsters like demons and dragons would enjoy fixed MR, while lesser beings with MR would use the 1E method.

Re: Some monsters have the wrong powers
No, it seems like it would be a massive undertaking. I think the easiest solution is to simply rule that beings who are resistant to cold, for example, are not invulnerable to magical cold or the cold of monsters like white dragons. It's a difficult problem. It makes sense for white dragons to use f...

I generally don't read horror fiction because it's hard to find decent reviews to determine whether I want to invest the time to read the stories. Lots and lots of tepid crap out there these days, both in books and movies.

Re: Boots of speed/carpets & brooms flying
I'd argue that there are inherent limits to all of those, far more restrictive than time limits. For example... Carpet of flying - 55% of all carpets can carry only 1-2 people. 80% of all carpets can carry only 1-3 people. And only 20% of all carpets can carry as many as 4 people. Aside from some sm...
