Got Bandwidth?

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to diverge from the usual topics here and see what our users have as far as ISP bandwidth is concerned. If you want, go to Speedtest.net and click on the test server nearest your location. It will usually be colored gold/yellow. Let the test run and when it is finished, click on "copy forum link" and then reply to this thread and paste that link in your reply.

Also, please let us know what type of connection you have.... for example; Cable, DSL, FIOS (Verizon Fiber Optic Service or FTTH [fiber to the home], U-Verse (VDSL, Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line), etc. Usually we can tell what kind of connection you have by your ISP name but let's list it anyways.

Here is mine.... I am on Comcast Cable Modem.

Here's what I get. I'm only paying for a 6Mb download, 2Mb upload service, so this is good!

I'm disgusted with Comcrap (Comcast) as they are now utilizing DOCSIS 3.0 which in theory would allow up to 150Mb/s + down and 100Mb/s+ up speeds to the house, but they have capped it. I realize that cable is shared along users coming off of the same network trunk and this is why I like U-Verse because while yes you are still on old twisted pair, you have your own feed to the VRAD which has a fiber connection to the central office.

Best offering is FTTH (Fiber To The Home) in which case, speeds are limited only by your budget.

So Diorche, does U-verse guarantee those speeds? Or is it like DSL where they guarantee "up to" x amount of speed, but in the tiny print it says "minimum speed 500kb" or something like that? That's what they did to me long ago when I had DSL.

I take it this would be a waste of my time with my dialup? I don't even know if it'd work. I have very slow earthlink dialup.

The Site showed 3 kbs for download and 27 kbs for upload. Seems direct link wants to show it in mbs.

The speeds are guaranteed up to the first router in the AT&T network I believe. VDSL is WAY better than traditional ADSL because the max distance the copper travels is less than 3,400 feet versus the 17,000ish feet it would go on ADSL.

Ultimately FTTH is where you (and everyone else) wants to be.

We recently switched from Comcast because they were proving terribly unreliable here in MN. When we used it in IL, it was generally pretty good. Now we're on Qwest DSL fiber-optic and it's WAY faster than Comcast ever was. I can't really test on Speedtest at the moment, I have some anime torrents coming down at 6mb/sec

(3 times as fast as Comcast EVER got, and 6 times as fast as it's average)

If I remember when I tested on Speedtest, it seemed to show Comcast being faster on the download with Qwest being much faster on the upload. But my real world stuff (I download a lot of anime) definitely shows Qwest as being far better. Plus there hasn't been any outages. We were at the point on Comcast where at least one modem reset per day was needed, and we'd often have half hour blocks of no service. Totally unacceptable.

Of course, we do live in a fiber area, so I'm sure that is a huge factor.

Well, I had been checking in periodically, and didn't see new posts. What I hadn't noticed was that I was not logged in any more. Finally logged in and got caught up on stuff

I really need to get interested in AD&D again, I miss tabletop gaming. I am pretty sure I could get my husband and a few others involved with that, I know he's sick of the rules lawyering that has been in the 3E and now Pathfinder group he's been in.

I kind of get a 'fix' in with World of Warcraft and some play by post BESM games (anime role-play), but it's not quite the same.

Both, but mainly traditional copper.

Sadly, I live in in what might be considered a black zone. Satellite is about the only option but its far too expensive for me. And the ones available to me I hear some bad things about depending on the forum I visit. My real option would be to move but who knows when that might happen. With more houses being built between the boundaries of the two cities you'd think that this black zone would be slowly erradicated. :/

When I was in the country area I used Roadstar which used the cellphone towers instead of Satellite and I received very good speeds. I do not thnk they have moved out far from where they started but their might be other companies like them as an alternative to dial up or satellite.
