I don't think it was me that offered up that idea.
In other words, devils call themselves baatezu in the same way that elves call themselves tel'qessir or whatever it is ("the people" or "the race"?), while we just refer to them as elves and demons? I can see that as a very workable explanation.
That makes the most sense to me. There are precedents for this kind of verbage in AD&D: svirfneblin for deep gnome, duergar for dark dwarf, the elven racial descriptors, and using national names to describe humans such as Calshites for people from Calimshan, Zhents for Zhentil Keepers, and Purple Dragons for Cormyrean knights.

P.S. Tramp indeed does rule. 8)
Tired of clone MMOs? So are we!

When I'm constipated, I like to read Wormy in the bathroom. The way it's drawn, I feel like I'm exploring a lot of intricate areas in the world with each panel. It excites my inventive nature and really makes me poop! :D

His drawings in the Monster Manual, which I was just looking at yesterday, avoid presenting a background like that. They zoom right in on the creatures themselves. I love that about them. He used empty spaces to create a sense of existence that is cleaner than shading but just as potent.

(...I'm using words I don't even think I understand now. )

Clean. Crisp. Sharp. Full. I wish I could draw like that....

A little TMI there don't ya think. Ewwwwwww!
At the edge of madness, he will show no sadness
Never broken, he'll be back for more
Proven under fire, over trench and wire
No fear of death, he's unshakeable
Forged for the war, he's unbreakable
